Color Theory with Susan Sarback

"Horse Statue"   9 x 12 oil on canvas Still Life/palette knife work by Terry d. Chacon

This past week I drove to Fair Oaks, Ca. for a workshop with Susan Sarback.  This workshop was for advanced students and was about color theory.  She also gave a demo on a new approach she is working on using a brush.   I took all the notes down but decided since I have not worked with Still Life that I would just continue to use my handy knife.    The above study was about bringing out the focal point by dulling everything else around to make it literally pop off the canvas.

"Nude Statue"   9 x 12 oil on canvas Still Life/palette knife work by Terry d. Chacon
This study was about painting white.

"Blue Vase"  8 x 10 oil on canvas board Still Life/palette knife work by Terry d. Chacon

This was a study on painting colored glass.

To get away from the studio a few of us headed down to the American River on Wed. after class.   Oh it felt so good to be back in my element again after all the head strain from the workshop.   Low and behold, it started to rain, I quickly finished up and headed back to Judy Bloom's.    Judy is a long time friend and she owns the father to my puppies Sally and Olive.    We had such a great time and that evening she took me to a great little French Restaurant "Plan B".   You must go there if you are in the Sacramento area.

"Glass, Shell and Daffodils"   9 x 12 oil on canvas Still Life/palette knife work by Terry d. Chacon
This was another study on glass, white and flowers.

"Oranges for Breakfast"   8 x 10 oil on canvas board Still Life/palette knife work by Terry d. Chacon

This study was on white and fruit.

Another fabulous workshop with Susan Sarback.

Each of these Still Life's will be available in print and note cards through my Fine Art America site.

Some of these paintings are also available through me at shacone@aol.com

Save this date:   May 12, 2012 the opening of a new plein air exhibit.

Segil Fine Art Source and Falkner Winery

4th Annual Plein Air Invitational

"Morning"  6 x 8 oil on canvas board/palette knife by Terry d. Chacon

We arrived at the Falkner Winery in Temecula, Ca. (  http://www.falknerwinery.com/  ) early to get set up for a day of painting at the 4th Annual Plein Air Invitational.   What a surprise to find that the vineyards were still dormant because we have not had enough rain to get them started this year.   The work crews were busily setting up for the wine tasting as they expected 9 bus loads of people throughout the day.    We were told to bring our artistic color for our paintings.  I chose to paint the vineyards the way I saw them and expand on the beautiful mountains and other lovely settings to enhance the beauty of the vineyards.   The blue mountains were amazing, and I loved the distant trees and the different homes throughout the vineyards.   The painting above turned out quite well with the blue orange palette and it is also very juicy looking with lots of thick strokes of paint.  Yummy!

"Red House Blue Mountains"   9 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife.

What a beautiful setting.   This was painted from the front porch of the wine tasting room.   By this time it was getting very hot and I knew I needed a lot of shade in order to stay cool enough to paint.  I loved the red house and it's components in the distance beyond the vineyards.  Settled amongst the beautiful trees and distant mountains.

After completing this painting we went to lunch at the beautiful Pinnacle Restaurant on the grounds.   A lovely lunch with new artist friends and the wine was fabulous.   After each painting was complete we framed them and Laura Segil had a beautiful display set up for us to hang our paintings for the wine tasters to look at and purchase.

"House in the Shade"   6 x 8 oil on canvas board/palette knife

On Sunday we arrived earlier than the caretakers and had to wait for the gate to open.  Once opened we scoped out a place to paint.   The wind was really blowing so we used the car as a shield.   I chose this little cottage up on the hill to paint.  I loved how it was nestled amongst all the beautiful trees and the dirt road.   The mountains again were not disappointing, so beautiful.   Even though the vineyards were dormant, these people have the best scenery any way you look.   Perfect for plein air painters.

Terry holding onto her hat for a photo moment with her painting and the view she was painting.

We opted for an early lunch as we knew the day was going to be even hotter than the day before.   Afterwards we set up in the garden area which is covered in natural shade.   Quite comfortable for a very hot day of painting.

"Late Afternoon Shadows"   6 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife.

My artist friend Patricia Rose Ford and myself painting in the garden at Falkner Winery.

My son Matthew and his girlfriend Vanessa partaking in the wine tasting.

It was a beautiful event and we look forward to painting there again in the fall.

All paintings are available, contact me for details.

Until next time, ENJOY THE ART!   Terry d. Chacon

Gems of Riverside, Ca. 6 days 11 paintings

Plein Air Artists of Riverside/PAAR 7th Annual Paint Out 2012
"Gems of Riverside"
Riverside, Ca.

"Red Light Green Light"  Mission Inn Riverside, Ca. 12 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

First day of painting after checking in at the Riverside Art Museum and having my canvas's stamped for the week.   After painting  we enjoyed a lunch at the Mission Inn.  I had to leave early to attend the opening reception for my show at Banning Center for the Arts of my Grand Canyon paintings.   Featured artist David Fairrington along with the watercolor paintings of the late Milford Zornes.

"The Dog Walker" Mt. Rubidoux 9 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

Early to rise, I met fellow artists Patricia Rose Ford and Nita Harper to paint at the dog park near Mt. Rubidoux.   Lots of people were walking their dogs down the path.   I am not sure how far they go, but most of them did come back by to see how we were doing with our paintings.   I loved the sky that morning and wanted to get a big sky painting.   As I was looking up I noticed the circle of light around the huge cross at the top of Mt. Rubidoux.   A beautiful setting for a painting.  Afterwards we went to Mi Tortilla for lunch.  My friend Ellie Joy Schwartz and her dog Maxi joined us.

"Casey's Cupcakes" Mission Inn  6 x 8 oil on canvas board/palette knife

After lunch we then headed down to paint at the Mission Inn Mall.   I always loved this little cupcake shop.  The light was perfect, casting shadows and reflective light.  Love this little gem.

"Setting the Mood" Oak Quarry Golf Course 11 x 14 oil on canvasboard/palette knife
Arriving early morning to paint at the golf course, this view was special.  I loved the atmosphere and the reflections in the pond on this overcast morning.

"The Quarry"  Oak Quarry Golf Course 9 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

After a delightful lunch with other artists, I set out to paint some of the beautiful quarry.   This view is passed  the pond (on the left) looking at the beautiful rock formations and distant mountains.   I understand the signature hole is remarkable and hopefully one day I will be able to paint that view.

After painting all day we were invited to Brian and Janet Wolf's home for a bowl of Chile and beer.   It was a great way for us to wind down for the day.   Thanks Brian and Janet.

"What a View" Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church 6 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

This is a fairly new church in Riverside.  The building has 5 different  domes  and is incredible.   I chose to just paint one dome with the beautiful mountains in the background and the orange grove.   Hope to go back and do another view.

"Little Red Car"  Fox Theatre on Mission Inn Ave.  6 x 6 oil on canvas board/palette knife
On Wed. I had to go to the foundry to pick up some bronzes that were ready and then to paint in the late afternoon with Pat.   We arrived downtown to paint the Fox Theatre and wanted to try a street scene as well.  When we arrived I realized I had left my canvas boards at home and after searching my gear I had by chance put in this little 6 x 6.   Saved!    I tried several drawings before this cute little red Volkswagen stopped directly in front of me.   So I again wiped off my drawing and painted this scene.  All in all it turned out pretty darn neat and I was very happy.

"Shadows on the Brandstater Gallery"  La Sierra University 9 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

Interesting building.  My husbands first sight of this painting says "What happen to the roof".    Interesting architecture for sure.
 "
"Yearlings in the Orange Grove"  Citrus Park Riverside, Ca.  12 x 12 oil on canvas board/palette knife

Heritage Citrus Park in Riverside, is the most fabulous place to paint.  Every way you look is a painting.  I definitely want to go back to this place.

"Afternoon Delight" Citrus Park Riverside, Ca.  6 x 8 oil on canvas/palette knife

My good friend Ellie Joy Schwartz came out to watch us paint and took this photo.

Another gem from the day.

"Bougainvillea" Unitarian Church Administration  8 x 10 oil on canvas/palette knife Quick Draw

After walking around the block at the Riverside Art Museum where 30 some artists had set up to paint in the Quick Draw, I decided on this quaint little gem.  After setting up my easel and putting out my paints waiting for the whistle to blow, low and behold someone parked their car right in front of the house.   I begged them to park some place else and after much deliberation they decided to move.   I quickly grabbed a cone from the construction site behind me and placed it in the parking space in front of the house, so I would not have to worry about someone else blocking my view.   Who knows the next person might tell me to go fly a kite.   I did invite them to come to the reception to see their beautiful old house in the show.  They were quite happy to hear that.

Lunch at the Mission Inn with friends after a week of painting.

Another great paint out put on by PAAR.   Reception and exhibit at the Riverside Art Museum, Saturday Mar. 31, 2012 from 6 to 9 pm.   Exhibit lasts for 2 months.  Hope to see you there.

Plein Air Magazine March 2012

Look who landed a spot in the Plein Air Magazine!   Yep, that's me in this international magazine.   I was surprised as anyone when I heard the news.   When editor Steve Doherty said he was interested in some photos about extreme painting sights I sent in a couple photos from our trip to the Grand Canyon in November.   I thought they might end up in the weekly online newsletter but had given up when they never appeared.    Then last week I started getting emails from other plein air artists who had received their copy of the magazine stating that I was on page 91.   We went to Barnes and Noble to get a copy, but they were out, so I had to wait for mine to come in the mail.   It arrived on Monday.   And to top it off he even quoted me.

Here is the cover to March 2012.   A painting by Ken Auster.   My first class with Susan Sarback was at Ken Auster Studio's in Laguna Beach.   Small world.

Here is Page 91.   If you are interested in plein air art, this magazine has it all.   Great articles, feature stories about great plein air artists and beautiful paintings from around the world.

"Final Cut" is the name of my most recent Dog Show Scene 2012 painting.  As you recall I had asked for titles on my fan page on Facebook.   95 titles were submitted and everyone waited patiently until I made my decision.   Yvonne Ljungkvist of Sweden was the contest winner.  Congratulations Yvonne!   Funny how a title finishes the piece.

Prints from this piece are now available on Fine Art America.   Several sizes are available on paper, canvas or acrylic, you can even pick a frame.   http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/terry-chacon.html

Two more drawings for the Dog Show Scene 2012 Series below.

Photo reference taken by me at the Palm Springs dog show in Jan.   This is Abbe running with Apache in the Hound Group.   This piece is 18 x 18.

The photo reference for this piece was submitted by Beth Anne Hall.   This is the New Jersey Specialty and these are some of the special bitches from that day.  This piece is 12 x 24.

Well I am off to New York City to see the Westminster Dog Show and partake in all the festivities.  More on that when I return.

Until then, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART!   Terry d. Chacon

"Untitled" Signed and Finished

"Untitled" 18 x 24 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon
"Dog Show Series 2012"

Finished and signed but this painting has no title yet.  I have posted on my facebook fan page a contest to name this painting.   The winner will receive a set of note cards of the painting.
You can join in all the fun, click on the link below, join my fan page and comment on the post with the completed painting.

THE PROCESS
"Thought you might enjoy the process start to finish of this painting."

The drawing.

The wash-I mix color and turpentine to lightly wash the whole painting.

I wait for the wash to dry and come back through with some color.  Paying great attention to shadow, light and value.

The last step is to refine the painting.  Adding the darkest darks, lightest lights and value paying close attention to my focal point.  The focal point is the main focus of a painting, all the other subjects are part of just part of the crowd so to speak.   Can you pick out the focal point?

This painting is now available in prints and cards on my Fine Art America page.

I am also excited to announce that my artwork was featured in an article written by Peter Belmont in the Dec. 2011 issue of Sight and Scent.   The article is about Sighthound artists from the past and now.   Here are a few photos of the national publication.

It's a great feeling to be recognized by your peers in a national magazine and to be mentioned with some of the great masters.   Thank you Peter Belmont for including me in your article.  This magazine is available online, at dog shows and at bookstores.  Here is a link to purchase online.

Painting Assistencia in Redlands, CA

"Gateway to Assistencia"  9 x 12 oil on canvas board by Terry d. Chacon

A few weeks ago we went to paint at Assistencia.   Assistencia is a part of the San Gabriel Mission and is located in Redlands, Ca.   more info on the mission:

"The Bell Tower"   9 x 12 oil on canvas board by Terry d. Chacon

Photo from the cloudy day.  (photo by Pat Ford)

Now my reason for writing this blog is to show you the difference a day makes.   When I arrived a couple Sundays ago it had been raining early in the morning and it was cloudy and cool.   The Bell Tower was created on that day.   Because of the weather I really didn't see a lot to paint so settled on focusing on the Bell tower.

Today when I went to paint, it was bright and sunny.   Although the Bell Tower was still inviting to paint, there was a lot more going on that made for a nice landscape.   The fence, the Mission Bell, the trees in the background and of course the San Bernardino mountains.   The fun of plein air is to set a mood.  I think I accomplished that in these 2 paintings.   Your comments are welcome.   I plan to go back again on Friday, lets see what that day will bring.  I will add that painting to this posting so be sure to check back.

UNTIL NEXT TIME, please enjoy the ART!

Terry d. Chacon

New paintings will be added to my Fine Art America account where you can order prints and note cards.   They make great gifts for you or someone special.  Here is the link.  http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/terry-chacon.html  Also, if you have a favorite painting and do not see it on Fine Art America, be sure to let me know, I will put the painting on FAA right away so you can purchase a print or note cards.

Happy New Year 2012

"Winter at the Back Bay"    10 x 10 oil on canvas (Plein Air) by Terry d. Chacon

It is great to be back outside painting again.   We have an upcoming event with SoCalPapa at the Back Bay so we are making sure we have a selection of paintings to offer not only for the juried exhibit, but to sell at the event.

The holidays left me with a nasty cold, which I am sure a lot of you have had the same thing.    My artist friend Patricia Rose Ford and I went to the Back Bay on Tuesday for a wonderful afternoon of painting.   We first stopped in at King of Frame to purchase a couple frames for some paintings and then went to the Hyatt for a wonderful lunch.   Crab Cake sandwich with sweet potato fries, if you're in the area, I highly recommend.

We arrived around 2:30 to start painting and by 4:30 it was getting very cold.   Each of us had completed one painting and decided to go ahead and call it a day.    Getting back out to Redland's on the 91 freeway at this time is not advisable, so we stopped at Starbucks and drank a latte waiting for the time to pass.   Smart thinking, a usual 2 1/2 hour drive in traffic was just about an hour home.   We were happy with our decision.

IN THE STUDIO

I have two paintings going on in the studio.   One is my 2nd in a series of Dog Show Scene paintings.   Photo reference submitted by Joanne Sternhell.   The other is a commissioned piece which I cannot share, but I will once I get approval from my clients.

18 x 24 in progress

18 x 24  The Wash in progress.

Also, in the studio is a life size head study of an afghan hound which I will complete to debut at the Afghan Hound Club of America Nationals in Atlanta in October.

The holidays are always exciting, but I am excited to be back creating in my studio and out in the open air.

Until Next Time, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART!
