This coastal wetland, one of the largest in southern California, is renowned as one of the finest bird watching sites in North America.    Many plein air artists spend a lot of time painting this vast landscape. It is one my most favorite places to paint.   The vistas, the bluffs, the wetlands and the activities are always enjoyable.   The weather is always changing, the fog rolls in, the sun can be bright, the shadows amazing and the distant atmosphere is always a challenge to capture in a short amount of time.    This is what makes it exciting to me to capture on my canvas.

Getting ready for the exhibit.   My paintings all laid out on the table for that last spray of sealer, then to frame.

After hanging the exhibit my plein air artist friend Patricia Rose Ford who accompanied me on the trip down to Newport to set up the exhibit and I painted a couple paintings.   You just cannot make a trip to the Back  Bay without your painting gear in tow.   If you do, you'll be sorry.

My first painting is the view from the Interpretive Center looking West.   You can stand there and paint a dozen paintings and never paint the same thing twice.   I was still able to capture that morning feel in this one.

"Sweet Spot"   6 x 12 oil on canvas with palette knife.

After a nice lunch at P. F. Chang's we drove out to the Back Bay for a late afternoon painting.   It was challenging as the sun kept creeping behind the clouds when we first arrived.  So I had to decide on a sunny painting or a cloudy painting.   I chose the sunny route and glad I did.  Within the hour the clouds were gone.

"Close Up"  11 x 14 oil on canvas with palette knife.
