Painting in the Rain

"Rooftops from the Riverside Art Museum"   8 x 10 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon

Yesterday the Plein Air Artists of Riverside  were treated to a day of painting and a fantastic demo by Chuck Kovacic.  Chuck came all the way out from San Fernando Valley on a very rainy morning to paint downtown Riverside, Ca.   We met up at the Riverside Art Museum in hopes of finding a dry place to stand while we painted.   We walked all around, showing Chuck some of our special places to paint, but ended up back at the Riverside Art Museum.   After getting permission from the staff we were able to obtain access to the roof of RAM.    There were lots of views to paint, but only limited space under cover.

I have always enjoyed painting the Riverside First Congregational Church.   Built in 1913 and a landmark for downtown Riverside.  When I set up I wanted to make sure to fit it in.   The rainy day was making everything very flat, but the distant silhouette of the steeple of the church was almost lit up on one side against the cloudy skies which became my focus of the painting making a nice back drop to the foreground.

After the morning of painting we met up at the Mission Inn.  Because of the rain they seated us inside the Presidential Lounge where we enjoyed a tasty lunch with margaritas.   Great conversation about plein air, special times and getting to know our guest Chuck Kovacic.

We then returned back to the museum for another painting session before gathering our belongings to set up for the demo by Chuck.

Garden Paintings/one more time!

"Spring" 9 x 12 oil on canvas, painted on location by Terry d. Chacon

This week we had the opportunity to paint Lucy Heyming's garden. Lucy and her husband Frank have 5 acres of beautiful gardens and it is amazing that she and her husband are the main caretakers. Both Lucy and her husband are Master Gardners and from the looks of their beautiful place, it is a title well warranted. From vegetables, herbs, cactus, oriental and of course the 4 seasons. "Spring" is one of 4 large statues spaced throughout the garden. I hope I will have the opportunity to paint the other 3.

"Lucy's Pond" 6 x 12 oil on canvas, painted on location by Terry d. Chacon.

I was especially excited to be able to paint a lili pond again. And as you might guess, the lilies did not cooperate. There were a couple and they tried real hard to open up but just not today. This is a beautiful area of the garden under a gorgeous Weeping Willow surrounded by Spring vegetation.

Thank you Lucy for allowing me to paint your beautiful garden.

Until next time, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART! Terry d. Chacon

It's All About The Frog

"Fascination" 16 x 20 Oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon

Commissioned piece for Christine from Virginia Beach.    Chris contacted me a while back about doing a painting for her and we started looking at her favorite photos.   When this one came through I jumped at the chance.   I so enjoyed painting this piece with a smile on my face and once started could not wait to finish.   I have seen my own dogs in this pose but have never had a camera, but laughed at them for their curiosity.

Thanks Chris for the opportunity to paint your lovely dog, giving me artistic license to make it my own  and for supplying me with great reference material.

Until next time, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART!    Terry d. Chacon
