I met Hasnul on Facebook and he has a pack of Saluki's that he takes out and lets them run free. I was so taken with this that I asked him to send me some photos. It was such a hard choice to pick just one photo, but this particular photo captured my attention. Can you guess why? I am having a contest on Facebook, if you join my fan page you can take a guess on the focal point of the painting. All who guess correctly will be put in a drawing for a free piece of artwork from me. The drawing will be Aug. 6. Hasnul is from Malasia, he is veterinarian. "El Matador" 9 x 12 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon Terry with her "El Matador" Painting Wednesday we took off for another wonderful day of painting at the beach. This time Pat and I were meeting another plein air artist Nita Harper for a painting day at El Matador State Beach in Malibu. http://www.rockcitynews.com/pages/california/labeaches/elmatador.html This is a new painting site for us, and we were very excited about going. When you arrive you are up on a bluff that overlooks the ocean, I mean way up. Come closer to the edge, oh my, a view you cannot imagine. Our friend Nita had prepared a beautiful lunch for us. We set and talked about painting and family and caught up on the months that we had not seen Nita. After eating we hiked down the canyon to a level view that all of us were happy with and found our space for a painting. There are several vista's to paint on the way down, but of course we had to walk clear to the bottom and check out each spot. I chose this huge rock as I loved the archway underneath that led to the beautiful light on the other side under the rock. The light hitting the rock was so beautiful and I wanted to capture the beauty of the rock as well as the ocean in the back ground. (Painting above) After our first painting session we decided to hike back up to the top, I am so sore this morning using muscles that I forgot I had! Nita then treated us to a special desert as we waited for the beautiful late afternoon light.  Pat and Nita enjoying an afternoon break before starting another painting. We walked over to the side of the bluff and looking west, we all painted the view with the beautiful light on the ocean. I loved the variations of the cliffs distant and close as they were back lit by the sun and the beautiful way the water sparkled in the water and the ground cover lit up on the bluffs. |

Painting at San Pedro Harbor

| "Gloomy Day" San Pedro Harbor by Terry d. Chacon The Plein Air Artists of Riverside (www.pleinairartistsofriverside.blogspot.com) painting location was San Pedro, Ca. A group of us headed out early morning and arrived at the harbor around 9 am. After a quick trip to find the restroom and grab another cup of fresh coffee we scoped out the area to find a place to paint. We chose the area where the Fisherman boats were located because of the nice reflections in the water. It's hard for me to find something of interest on gloomy days so the reflections were inviting along with the turquoise green boat. I set up my easel, sketched in my composition and proceeded to start my painting. Oh no! Where is that boat going? Yes, the turquoise boat packed up and left the scene. Luckily I had enough information to finish the painting. It was a great day painting in nice cool weather and I enjoyed eating at the Fisherman's Market. My friend Louise bought a Red Snapper and brought it home to her family. I have never seen such huge fish in my life. When going to the San Pedro Harbor be sure to check out the fish market as well as the Maritime Museum. I took these photos at the harbor. Talk about huge, amazing how big these freight liners are. |

Newport Back Bay Revisited

Last week I decided I needed just one more painting of the Back Bay for my plein air collection I will be exhibiting at the SOCALPAPA Paints Newport Back Bay show & sale. I will add the flyer for the event at the end of this post.
I also needed to go to King of Frame to pick up some more frames as I didn't have enough at home to use on the 18 to 20 works that I will displaying. My friend Patricia Rose Ford and I left around 8 am. Oh the traffic was fierce and the heat was already on. We arrived at King of Frames Randy Higbee Gallery around 10 am, what is usually a 45 minute drive on a good day. Not only did I need to buy 10 more frames but I also was taking the commissioned painting for Santa Barbara Kennel Club and some posters that they had made to have framed also. So alot was to be accomplished before we were able to go out and paint.
If you need frames Randy's gallery is the place to go. Most of the work they can accomplish either while you wait or you can go out and paint for a few hours and come back and pick up your order. We were lucky that all my work was taken care of while there and we were free to go out and paint the day away.
We went out to the Back Bay first. I wanted to pick up some postcards for the event to send to some of my local collectors and see exactly where we were suppose to go on Friday for the reception. 50 plein air paintings were juried into the exhibit by Ann Lofquist. The paintings not only were to be plein air (strictly enforced) but had to be of the Back Bay. It should be a very enjoyable evening of art under the stars at the center.
The Muth Interpretive Center is a large modern building hidden below and backs into the mountain that overlooks the Upper Bay. I can see why this exhibit is so well thought of by the community and the artist alike. The scenery is spectacular, a painting anyway you look especially for plein air artists who paint on location. You just cannot duplicate this view from a photograph, you have to be there to get that beautiful atmosphere and light. Since I am new to this group SOCALPAPA I am looking forward to the reception to see all the beautiful works and meet the talented plein air artist that have made it into the show. I am also looking forward to meeting the 60 avid plein air artist who will be exhibiting their plein air works the following 2 days.
After looking the place over and drooling over the scenery we set out to find the Back Bay Cafe.
One has to nourish themselves before a long day of painting. After a leisurely lunch we were ready to paint. We traveled up the Back Bay Drive heading north and pulled off to set up to paint the beautiful bluffs. At our arrival we noticed the beautiful reflections in the water. What I liked was the little strip of blue water on the side of the bluffs that were lit up in the front and in shadow in the back. I was very happy with my little jewel and I have the perfect frame for it. It will proudly be displayed at the exhibit.
We took off from there and headed towards Laguna. Getting around the point of Crystal Cove we decided an early evening painting would be great so that's where we ended up. Our friend Lilli was working in the area and said she would meet up with us for a late dinner at the Beachcomber Cafe.
Pat and I decided we needed a Margarita before starting our late afternoon early evening painting, so after we sipped away we headed out for another painting. I am not happy with my painting so I will not be displaying it. I wanted to capture the beautiful sun reflecting on the water, which I did, but I put those horrendous umbrellas in again, they remind me of circus umbrellas and not beach umbrellas. I really have to learn to paint some umbrellas. I think I should practice at home a few times so I can get that wonderful beach painting that I have in my mind but just cannot quite get it onto the canvas.
After a wonderful dinner with Lilli and Pat we headed back home. It was another wonderful day of painting and I am so happy that this is my job!

"Riviera Morning View" 9 x 12 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon
Mark Schooley of the Riverside Community Art Association organized a group of artist from the Riverside area to go to Ensenada to paint the Ensenada Cultural Center. An exhibit from the works created there and from photos taken there will be on exhibit in Ensenada and in Riverside this coming year. The program is through the Sister Cities program and Mark is in charge of the Arts program.
We left early Saturday morning on a tour bus from Maxi Foods in Riverside. Eight of us boarded the bus to travel to the boarder where we would be picked up by van from our hotel The El Cid BEST WESTERN EL CID ENSENADA BAJA CALIFORNIA in Ensenada. Seven other people from Riverside (artist and photographers) would join us in Ensenada. Ensenada - So Much to do! Baja California Mexico, The Official Website of the Ensenada Toursm Board
After arriving in Ensenada Mark first took us to eat at the Fish Market. We set at a little cantina and enjoyed fish tacos and beer. The cantina was filled with people enjoying the mariachi music and the cook was delightful. She reminded me of Eddies grandmother who just wanted to keep cooking and serving us. She was great.

we headed to the Riviera Cultural Center where we were treated to a tour of the grounds by the director. Riviera del Pacifico. Ensenada, Baja California.
The center is one of Ensenada’s most beautiful buildings first opened as a gambling casino and hotel during the 1930s gathering movie and sports celebrities from that era. It has had it trials and tribulations over the years and was remodeled in the late 1980's and then opened as a social and cultural events center. Complete with beautiful gardens and decorated walls by infamous artist Alfredo Martinez this cultural center is now being used for the arts, weddings and gatherings for special events. Riviera Cultural Center hosts interest sites such as Ensenada Historical Museum, City Gallery and Bar Andaluz. Speaking of Bar Andaluz! After our tour we finished up in the bar.
Our bartender who had worked here for many years shared stories about the center and that it is known for being the birth place of the Margarita. Let me tell you this was indeed the best Margarita I have ever had and I brought home the Tequila and recipe so we can share with our friends.
We then headed back to the motel to get ready for dinner at Marisco's where we were serenaded by a Mariachi band and had some of the best fish imaginable. Some of the artist got together later for a night stroll and to hit up the liquor store, but I was exhausted and went to bed.
The next day after a wonderful Mexican breakfast we headed to the cultural center for a day of painting. The mayor of Ensenada met us at the center and greeted us with open arms. We all went our separate ways to start painting. I chose the very front of the property as far off as I could get as I wanted to paint the beautiful gardens leading up into the center.
Later in the afternoon I set up in the garden in the rear and painted the painting below. When I started it was getting chilly and before long the fog was rolling in. At one point when I looked from my canvas to the building it was hard to differentiate between the white building and the sky. The gardens were still beautiful.

Can you imagine how excited I was to see this Afghan Hound strolling down the street. I spoke a little to the gentlemen about his dog but he didn't speak any English and my Spanish is not great. I gave him my card and hopefully he will contact me so I will know more.
We finished the day with a wonderful dinner at a local restaurant. The next day after breakfast and a little shopping we boarded the van back to the border. One this to remember on our next trip is to be sure and have a potty break before reaching to border. Our wait was 2 1/2 hours to get to the American side and we were all panicked to use the restroom.

On a very sad note, 17 Afghan Hounds were rescued in the Midwest last week. 2 were found dead and 1 has died since. They were horribly mistreated and left to starve to death by their breeder. I am donating a painting to help raise funds for the dogs. Please donate and your name will be put in for the drawing. All you have to do is donate money for the dogs. Here is the info for donating.

Lavender Fields

We headed out to paint more Jacaranda's but when we arrived they were definitely past their beauty. My friend Pat and I decided to go paint the Lavender fields in Cherry Valley. PAAR (plein air artists of riverside)Plein Air Artists of Riverside - Members Gallery had been painting there the last couple weekends for their annual Lavender Festival. Lavender Festival draws thousands to Cherry Valley Family InlandSoCal.com I was unable to attend because of prior commitments so was very happy that we were able to paint there yesterday. I hope to go back more times before the lavender is gone for the season. Stay Tuned.
