  Dog Gone Art presents Our Summer 2013 issue We introduce the incomparable Frank Kane in this issue. Successful dog breeder, writer, commentator, teacher and Chairman of the Kennel Club (UK) Breed Standards Committee are just some of the titles he can be given. Dog Gone Art's editor had a "frank" conversation with Mr. Kane and shares some of it with readers in this issue.

Getting Ready for the National

This year the Afghan Hound Club of America National Specialty will be in Portland, Oregon.  It's been 30 years since the last time the specialty was in Portland.   It will be nice to go back.   This year I will have a boutique with all of my bronze work to show.  When I have to fly into the National Specialties in other parts of the country I am limited to what I can bring. 

First time showing in the Northwest will be "Full Circle" and "Fancy".   Both are lost wax bronze and one is life size the other is 1 1/2 inches.  Joining "Fancy" this year will be "Elegant".   I will be adding a miniature to the collection of 5 in a series at the AHCA Nationals.   Collect one or collect the whole series. 

Each miniature comes in a Rosewood box with their name on a brass plate with the number in the series.   The interior is white leather.   Quite a presentation for a little one.  

Also this year I will be offering all my giclee prints at a reduced price.  I will no longer be carrying these prints as I have a company named Fine Art America who does a fabulous job making the prints as they are ordered and shipping them out to the world.   You can order giclee prints on canvas, acrylic, metal and several different papers.  You can also have them matted and framed.   Also available are greeting cards.  Wonderful 5 x 7 full bleed cards.

Be sure to check out my new finger painting designs.   While recuperating from my broken arm, I started painting with my left hand.   At nighttime I had to wear a special brace which caused quite a bit of pain the first hour so to pass the time I started doing these finger paintings with my Ipad.   Now I am hooked and while watching TV in the evening I am continuing to add to the collection.   Prints and greeting cards are available through Fine Art America, the link above.  Here are a few of my favorites, but check them out over 25 different designs so far.

Lake Arrowhead Plein Air Workshop

Demo painting!  

Choosing a site for the workshop was very easy.  I had painted here a couple times last year and actually went back and painted here again last week. (painting photo below)  

 

 I thought the view offered many possibilities for my students to accomplish and finish a nice painting from the workshop.   The above painting with large shapes and not too much detail, gave them something to work from.   Since I paint with a palette knife/painting knife, and only one artist has had previous experience using the palette knife, I gave them the choice of using a palette knife or using a brush to do their paintings.  I was excited to see that all of them dove in head first and gave it a college try.   They all did great and all seemed to love the effect of the palette knife.  Maybe some of them will continue.

Artist painting!

Continuing to paint as the shade moved so did they. 

This artist found herself a wonderful shady spot and was able to sit and paint. 

We did a critique of the paintings.  Here is part of the group, sharing some knowledge with each other.

I set up some paintings that I had completed in plein air at or near this site.  Some reading materials including my own books on art, some brochures and postcards.

 

A nice way to display on a path.  It worked out well, not only did the artist enjoy what I brought, but the folks visiting the area did as well.

 

Kathy showing off her body painting.  One thing about painting with the palette knife is it is very easy to get paint on you as well as the canvas.

The artist all did a wonderful job and were very excited to learn more about painting the great outdoors and about using a new tool.   Thanks to everyone who attended.  I look forward to seeing you at my next workshop in Oct. at the beautiful Mias Canyon!

Capturing Catalina in Plein Air

"Capturing Catalina in Plein Air" will open August 20, 2013 through Oct. 14, 2013, at the New Banning Gallery in downtown Banning, Ca.  

Four artist who have painted on the island, some going back around 8 years have come together to show their beautiful paintings from Catalina.

Patricia Rose Ford, known for her beautiful pastel paintings, has studied with Albert Handel for many years, will show off her skills of painting rocks and trees.  You may see some of the island icons in her exhibit as well.

Nita Harper, known for her savvy designs in oil, has studied numerous times with Frank Serrano and Ann Pinkerton.   You will love the way she captures the island in her beautiful little gems.

Joan Coffey, has painted on the island with me every time for the past 8 years!  She has painted in watercolor and acrylic and will be showing off her wonderful paintings and how she captures the island in these two mediums.   Joan has also studied with Frank Serrano and Debra Huse. 

Terry d. Chacon, had a vision to bring Catalina Island paintings to the mainland in an exhibit as which you will see in Banning.   She sets the mood in her paintings by capturing light and color using a palette knife.  She has studied with Susan Sarback for many years continuing the legacy of Henry Hensche.  

 

Completing my first painting with my  palette knife, using my right hand!   It's been 3 months since my injury and it felt wonderful to be able to use the palette knife again.  This trip I complete 4 paintings using my right hand and 3 using my left.   Nice to know when one arm tires, I can keep going with the other..........


Thank you to Clidine Roper and the Banning Gallery for exhibiting the paintings and bringing the island to Banning.  I'm sure the Phineas brothers would be proud to see their island now in Banning. 

A reception to honor the Artist and their beautiful works from the island where the light shimmers will be held Sept. 7, 2013, from 3 to 5 pm.

Updates-Much needed!

Just wanted to let you know I am still having issues with my right arm and hand.  Typing with one hand makes it difficult to give a lot of info on my blog.   I have two events coming up. 

A great way to get out of the heat and head to the Back Bay.  I will have 30 paintings available for sale, look me up. 

 

Another update will be my upcoming Workshop in beautiful Lake Arrowhead.  Come paint the lake and get ready for their upcoming Plein Air Competition.

Another update is the beautiful ad in Dog News with my painting for this year's Breeder's Showcase.  This year the painting is all about the Terrier Group.  The painting will be auctioned off the night of the Breeder's Showcase.  You do not have to be there to place a bid.  Contact me for details.

Painting With My LEFT Hand

Three weeks ago I had surgery on my right elbow to repair the tip of my radius which was broken off.  On April 13,  I was exhibiting my beautiful Sally and tripped in the ring causing my elbow to dislocate.  After a trip to the emergency by ambulance, they were able to repair the dislocation but not the radius.   After spending almost 2 weeks of going to surgeons and my primary care physician, it was decided to go in and repair the break.  The surgery was somewhat successful but only time will tell what my full recovery will be.  Sitting around the past couple of weeks, I decided I need a back up plan and have decided to try left hand painting.  The photos are the different stages, you be the judge! 

   This was my first painting, starting with a drawing.  This was from a photograph taken of Sally my afghan hound when she was around one year old.  I had drawn this out on a large canvas and started to paint it, but other work got in the way.  This drawing with my left hand is on an 8 x 10 inch canvas.

 

 

After the drawing I started out with a light wash of color. 

 

Then I went back in with more darks, after this is where I think I got into trouble.  Thus, too much paint and not being able to control with my left hand.

 

Here is the finished piece.  I know you are thinking, well what is wrong with this.  As an artist I have a vision of  the outcome of a painting.   This was not it.  Amazingly though, this painting resembles Sally's sister Olive, so all is not lost.

 

 

After a few days of figuring out where I went wrong, I decided to give it another try.

 

 

HOORAY, this is exactly what I wanted and amazingly, with my left hand.

 

So feeling pretty pleased with myself I decided to try a couple plein air paintings of my beautiful rose bushes.

Good thing I painted them when I did because the gardener, cut them back the following Sat.

 

So what should I paint next.  I will be doing the Newport Backbay Show in July.  This year for the sale ,  you can have studio paintings.  Since I am no sure when I will be going to the beach to paint I decided to paint a larger piece from a previous plein air painting.

 

 

What I am learning through this process of painting with my left hand is that my creativity comes from my brain.   I am hoping for a full recovery, but if I have some limitations, I am confident that I will be able to overcome them.

BACK TO NATURE

This exhibit (flyer above) was planned as part of my plein air workshop which was to be held April 27 & 28.  The workshop was postponed due to my injury (I broke my right arm showing my dog Sally on April 13) but, the Dorothy Ramon Center  still wanted to display the paintings I did in preparation of the workshop.  I had invited Plein Air Artist Patricia Rose Ford and Nita Harper to come paint the canyon with me on a couple occasions.  Their paintings are also on display.

  

Our plan is to have 4 Plein air workshops a year in the canyon followed by 4 Exhibits at the Center.   A portion of the sales from the exhibit  and the workshops will be donated to the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center.        www.dorothyramonlearningcenter.org

I am excited to collaborate with the center in bringing Native American culture and Plein Air art together.   Artist will not only experience painting on location on private land, but will learn about the native plants with archaeologist Daniel McCarthy.

Once I am able to paint again we will reschedule the 1st workshop.  Those who already signed up will have the first opportunity to enroll.

Meanwhile, I hope you will stop by the gallery to see the paintings on display.  They are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will go to the center.
