Yesterday a group of us from PAAR went on a field trip to visit King of Frame and to paint at Newport Back Bay. As I was painting my painting I was excited by the canoers in the bay and knew I had to get them in my painting. I was so happy when they came along again the sun had made this fabulous sheen across the bay and the canoes were just in time to be painted into the painting. I could hear the canoers laughing and having the best time in the water. It was such a joy to paint them and when I think about it, it brings a smile to my face! "Playful Spirit" Lost wax bronze by Terry d. Chacon

This is the 24th year of this annual exhibit for dog artists around the world. 195 artist submitted works to this show and I was lucky to have 2 pieces chosen. The exhibit starts Mar. 3 through April 7 at the Foyer Gallery and the City Arts Building then it is moved to the Kansas Coliseum for the Sunflower Cluster Dog Shows April 9 through April 11, 2010. I am pleased to have my work accepted into this exhibit and if I win awards it would be icing on the cake. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

"Puppy Love"

Just finished this commissioned painting today. Oh what fun this has been to paint. I loved the photo that the new owners of this painting sent to me. The dynamic light on the mom's nose and in parts of the painting, the puppies loving and climbing all over mom and the little guy in the back who almost looks like a shadow because he is so dark and in the shade. I enhanced him a bit to make him part of the pack.

I am sure any of you who breed dogs or have bred dogs have seen this scene and can appreciate this, which is why I was so excited to paint it. It brings back wonderful memories.

Looking forward to comments on this fabulous new piece. As most of you know I have a wonderful greyhound named "April". She was a wonderful model for this new piece. I know sometimes she really got tired of me feeling here and there to get the proportions and structure correct. Then making her run around and get excited so she would do this pose and I could sculpt! The pose is one of my most favorites that she does. She has many more, but this one is truly hers.

The Carriage Horse

Last night Jan. 3, 2010 a few plein air artists from the PAAR were out painting on the last night of the Festival of Lights at the Mission Inn in Riverside, Ca. City of Riverside, California - Festival of Lights I have from day one of starting my collection of paintings from this historic event always wanted to paint the beautiful white horses pulling their Cinderella carriage.

We set up on the Northeast corner of Orange and 5th street and I quickly sketched a scene that I had in mind. Using the back drop of the Mission Inn and the arch way that goes over 5th street, I waited for the carriages to make their move. Once they start coming they come around every few minutes, so I was able to capture the moving carriage. Amazing the way the lights that are so plentiful just light up the street and the carriages as they come around.

After painting we met up at one of my most favorite restaurants "Las Campanas", it is located in the Mission Inn Hotel. Mission Inn Hotel - Riverside California It has the most beautiful outdoor seating of any restaurant I have ever been too and with the Holiday lights it is truly special. We sent a friend Marsha who is here visiting from Kentucky over to make reservations for us. During the festival we have tried to get in to eat a couple times, but the wait was usually over an hour. Marsha was kind enough to check it out while we painted and able to get us in. We toasted the new year with our margaritas and listened to our friends ada m. passaro and Ron talk about their early connection to the Mission Inn. Amazing place with so much history, but to hear the behind the scenes story was incredible. Afterwards we were treated to a wonderful carrot cake for desert at Ada's home. What a wonderful evening, so sad the Festival of Lights is over, but I look forward to next year and I cherish the experience I had this year.

Bella Trattoria (Mission Inn Festival of Lights)

This festive spot of the Mission Inn Festival of Lights is on the north west corner of the Mission Inn. Bella Trattoria Mission Inn Hotel - Riverside California The new Bella Trattoria will tempt the palate with delicious Southern Italian Cuisine including brick oven baked pizzas, build your own pasta and pressed Panini sandwiches. Experience the flavors of Italy on their lovely patio dining.

We have eaten here many times and I can say the salads and pizza are some of the best around. I chose this area because of all the interaction with the people on the mall plaza, coming and going taking in the beautiful lights, plus one of my favorite places to eat. The entrance to the restaurant got brighter and brighter as the sky darkened. I especially love the huge nutcracker statues in each of the windows and the array of lights making up the outlines of nutcrackers that go all the way down the side wall. Every where you look is another painting, I now have 6 paintings of the festival of lights and hope to add more to the collection before the seasons end.

Night Painting Mission Inn Festival of Lights

Wed. afternoon we gathered up our night time painting gear and off to the Mission Inn Festival of Lights for a night time painting session. This is becoming a tradition for our group, Plein Air Artists of Riverside. PAAR! Last year I really wanted to paint the horse drawn carriages so Pat and I set up around the back side of the magnificent Mission Inn. Mission Inn Hotel - Riverside California (press on the link to read more about this National Historic building in downtown Riverside, CA.)

We arrived early enough to sketch our scenes onto the canvas, then to wait for the darkness to appear and over 350 million lights to light up the Mission Inn. It is incredible to watch the light move into darkness and the fabulous light display develop right in front of you. I knew I wanted to paint the horses but they were no where to be found during my set up time. They started arriving around 6 pm so I decided to quickly add one in moving across in front of me while I painted.

After painting we took a walk to find our friend Geeta who was painting on the other side of the building. This place was just packed and very difficult to walk around. All the restaurants in the immediate area had 1 1/2 hours wait time. There were children in large groups, ice skaters at the ice rink, carolers lined the streets, cars jammed (they really do need some sort of police control for the cars), vendors with gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate, popcorn and all sorts of delights to keep you comforted as you walked the streets of Riverside and took in this glorious event. We decided to walk to a local Mexican Restaurant as finding another parking space would have been difficult. After our meal we treated ourselves to gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate before calling it a night. What a great evening and the weather was fabulous. I am hoping to go back this coming Sunday if our beautiful weather holds.
