The Afghan Hound Review

Painting by Terry d. Chacon

"The Hound Group" with Abbe R. Shaw and Multiple Group Winning, Multiple Specialty Best In show, Grand Champion Abaca ShaCone Native Spirit "Apache"  is the cover for the last issue of the Afghan Hound Review.   Nothing more exciting than to have your painting adorn the cover of an International Magazine.   Afghan Hound fanciers from around the world have loved this magazine for over 30 years.   It is sad to say that we now have to say GOOD BYE!    Which makes this issue the last issue and a true collector's magazine.  I am very proud that my painting is on the cover.

When I first started in Afghan Hounds in 1973, yes almost 40 years ago there was a magazine called "Our Afghans" published by Ruth Weddle.   It was a cute little magazine and published for many years of which I advertised many times.    Later came Bo Bengston and Paul Lepianno who started The Afghan Hound Review.   They reached out to the World.    I could not wait to get my first magazine which was page after page of all the dogs I had heard about but had never seen.   Back in those days we didn't travel far to dog shows.    As I became more involved I did start traveling and from ads in this magazine I could not be more excited to see these beautiful dogs in the flesh.  Then to advertise a new champion or upcoming breeding was a dream come true.

As time went by Francine Reisman was hired to the publication and she was there to take your ads and help you in advertising your beautiful dogs.   I can't tell you the excitement this magazine brought to the Afghan Fancy.   Month after month and before the Internet this was our only way of advertising special wins, breeding programs and that special future star.    As the Internet became more popular and the immediacy to get that win or breeding out to the world and new people to the breed, the magazine was beginning to lose momentum with some.  It was very sad as each issue diminished in size, but it was still full of articles and up to date show results and some beautiful ads.    Fran kept it going for many more years but has finally said good bye.    The last magazine (cover above) is very special with most of the top dogs being advertised, some new people to the breed advertising and some great articles from the past.  A special Tribute to the Afghan Hound Fancy, a coffee table magazine, one you want to share with all of your family and friends.   When the word went out that Fran was calling it quits everyone came through to make this last magazine fabulous.    It is truly a collector's magazine for the world to see.

(This is our final ads for The Afghan Hound Review)

Great News!

Excited to also announce-now  there is talk of a possible "Afghan Hound In Review" a yearly publication where the fancy can advertise that special win, special breeding or future star.   If this is a go we can expect to see this out by Sept. of next year.
A magazine can never be topped by the Internet.   How often do you want to cuddle up with your laptop in the afternoon, not me, I prefer a hard copy magazine or a good book.
So maybe the Internet will not take our beautiful magazine away.   Something to think about.

Until next time, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART!   Terry d. Chacon

Beautiful photos of my paintings from the Grand Canyon, Redrock and Valley of Fire in Nevada, as well as some of my favorite local spots including Lake Arrowhead and Idyllwild, Ca. A perfect coffee table book to share with family and friends. If you did not order my first book, it is still available. Both books compliment each other and make great gifts.

This is the 3rd in a series of 8 that I have been commissioned to paint for Santa Barbara Kennel Club.   Each painting represents one of the 7 groups recognized by the American Kennel Club.   So far I have done the hound group-

The winner of the silent auction 2012 at the Breeder's Showcase  for 5K was Elois Veltman.   Thank you Elois for your support of my artwork and Santa Barbara Kennel Club.      Welcoming party at the home of  Dr. and Mrs. Gary Shaw.

The table decorations featuring my bronze sculptures were designed by Glen Lajeski, former VP executive for Disney Studios.   We are so happy to now have Glen as part of the Santa Barbara Kennel Club family.   His attention to detail is remarkable as you will see in some of the photos below.

Even Dr. Shaw's chickens shared in the enjoyment with fresh sod added for their enjoyment and ours.

Saturday morning we arrived early to work the first day of SBKC.

This is Jose Luis Cunhade Vasconsellos  from Brazil.   I was appointed his ring steward for the morning judging, he was such a gentlemen to the exhibitors and a wonderful judge.

The arena was ready for the festivities of the evening of the 4th annual "Breeder's Showcase"

The image from my painting adorns many items for sale through SBKC.   Catalogs, totebags, greeting cards and sweat shirts were available to purchase at the shows.   The image is also on posters that are placed throughout Santa Barbara and surrounding areas to invite spectators to the event.

The night time festivities, judging the dogs for the Breeder's Showcase.  Over 1000 exhibitors and breeders were invited to a free dinner paid for by the patrons of SBKC.  A beautiful evening under the stars in Santa Barbara, Ca.
