Painting Kimberly Crest

"Southside Entrance"  Kimberly Crest Redlands, CA.   9 x 12 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon (plein air)

I was so excited to have the chance to once again paint the famous Kimberly Crest Mansion in Redlands, CA.   On Wed. Mar. 30, 2011 the Redlands Plein Air group were invited to paint this beautiful, picturesque mansion nestled in the hills of Redlands.    Read more about this mansion at:  http://www.kimberlycrest.org/.   Always a beautiful place to visit, when we first moved to Redlands 22 years ago.   I used to take my son there for a nice picnic on the lawn, overlooking the beautiful Redlands and the valley of the Inland Empire.   We used to take our dogs there for photo shoots that we would use to advertise them in the Afghan Hound Review.   Sadly this all stopped around 2005.   I had painted there in 2004 and not a problem.   Upon returning in 2005 I was quickly escorted off the grounds and told that I needed to make an appointment to paint on the grounds and it would be $150.00 an hour.   I tried calling the city who said I needed to speak with the Non-profit that was in charge.   Not one person could tell me who to talk to only that they would bring it up at their next meeting and get back to me.   Well I never heard back.  Over the years it has been a joke when people ask about painting there.

This year Redlands Art Association in partnership with the Redlands Conservancy is hosting a plein air event and "Kimberly Crest" is one of the historic buildings that is on the list.   I really appreciate the opportunity to paint this beautiful place and happy my artistic abilities were in positive mode.  I am so very happy with my 2 paintings.

"What no Lillie's?"  Lily pond at Kimberly  Crest.    6 x 12 oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon  (plein air)

In my dreaming about painting at the Kimberly Crest Mansion I for sure wanted to paint the beautiful lily pond.   Luck would not be on my side.  The one day I can paint the beautiful pond not one lily was in bloom.   I chose to still paint the pond because of the beautiful colors and reflections.

The Redlands Art Association exhibit "Treasures Of Redlands" starts April 16 with a reception to honor the artist from 2 - 4 at the Redlands Gallery.    http://www.redlandsartassociation.org/.

"Isis"

"Isis"  30 x 40 inch oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon

The inspiration for this painting came from a photograph  from  Dallas Nunnery taken by Steven Marshall, she is the owner of this beautiful Frisian and I knew it would make a fabulous painting.  After getting permission from the photographer we decided a large canvas was in order.     This past year I have been pushing myself to do some larger paintings.    I am really liking the outcome.   However, this painting would possibly look great in any size.

I wanted to capture the expression of this horse and the extreme contrast of the light and dark on her.  It's all about the eye!    "Dallas" says the painting is magnificent and she is very pleased.

Until next time, ENJOY THE ART!

Sight and Scent Magazine

An interview with Terry d. Chacon

A few months back the editor of Sight and Scent contacted me after she saw an advertisement of my exhibit at RCAA Gallery in Riverside, Ca. under the direction of Mark Schooley "The Hound Movement".   She said after researching more about me she felt their magazine would like to do an article about me.   Well, of course I was honored and the rest is history.

The article is in the Mar. issue 2011.   They did such a fabulous job and the layout of the way they combined the photos I had sent to them was well done.   My husband Eddie feels this is the best article thus far and the presentation is great.

Here is a link to their website.   http://www.sightandscent.net/   Sight and Scent is a National Publication dedicated to the Hound Group.   You can order the magazine directly from the website.

Thank you Tammarie for this wonderful experience.

Until next time, PLEASE ENJOY THE ART!

Afghan Hound Paintings

                                                "Debbie's Love"   18 x 24   oil on canvas by Terry d. Chacon

I was very excited to be asked to paint this white afghan hound.

When I started taking workshops with Susan Sarback  (www.susansarback.com)  7 years ago to learn to paint en plein aire, she always told me I could take the same theory into my studio to use to paint my pet portraits.   The last couple of years I have been slowly progressing  and evolving.   This painting was done the exact same way that I do my plein air, except instead of painting on location I painted in my studio, using a group of photographs that my client had supplied me to use for this painting.

"Ashley" is an 8 x 8 oil on wrap around canvas.   My friend Lex Robertson had posted a photo of his dog lure coursing on faceback.  I immediately contacted him to see if he would get permission from the photographer for me to paint.   I loved the expression on the dogs face as she was  graduating into full flight, but what grabbed her attention as she was suppose to be chasing the lure.     This painting has so many possibilities and many have written their thoughts as to what she was doing and thinking.   I also loved the back lighting and the way the light came through her coat.   "Hey Look at Me!"
